Over the course of time your system might become insecure and vulnerable to attacks. This is usually because of an outdated system. Updating your system in Ubuntu is extremely simple and usually only takes 5-10 minutes.
Open The Update Manager
The Update Manager is located in System --- Administration --- Update Manager
You can see below what the update manager window looks like.
Check For Updates
In order to install all available updates, you should reload the list of packages. To do so simply click the Check button and wait for it to finish.
After you have an updated list of packages, you can now look through all the applications that need updating. If you do not want to update a certain one, untick the box on the left of its name. To see a description of what is updated in an application, click on its name and press Description of update.
Now that you have a brand new list of applications to update, click the Install updates button and type in your root password. Afterwords, if a vital piece of software is updated, then you might have to restart your system. Then you're all set and ready to go!
